Sweet 16 (and other magazines from my youth!)
Hey Gentle Reader,
Happy MONDAY! Yes, I'm still on vacation. Does it show? YES!!!!!!!!!!
I was reminiscing the other day about my favourite magazines as a kid/young teen. LOVED 16 magazine and Tiger Beat. Back then the Partridge Family, Jackson 5, Osmonds (oooh DONNY!!!!!) and the DeFranco Family were all hot (remember "Heartbeat is a Lovebeat"?) I loved David Cassidy and thought the Jackson 5 were the best group ever! I would have married Donny in a second and even got to see them at the CNE Grandstand in August 1971 at the tender age of 10. We were sitting somewhere between the clouds and the horizon and the Osmonds were small teeny dots dancing on the stage. I knew EXACTLY which dot was Donny mind you! Remember those funky white pantsuits they wore with the fringe on the arms and silver studs. Sigh.
Also enjoyed reading all their favourite things and those groovy pull-out posters. My room was plastered with them! Donny and David everywhere!
I always thought it would be fun to be featured in 16 Magazine so I could list all my fave things too - of course at my age, the list would be a bit older!
Drink: Then: Cherry Kool-aid Now: Coffee
Song: Then: Just Like a Yoyo (Osmonds) Now: Halo (Beyonce)
Colour: Then: Purple (like Donny!) Now: Chartreuse (SURPRISE!)
Movie: Then: Planet of the Apes Now: Strictly Ballroom (Aussie flick from the early 90's)
TV Show: Then: American Bandstand Now: The Big Bang Theory
Instrument: Then: Saxophone Now: Saxophone (well some things haven't changed!)
Animal: Then: Wolf Now: Fox
Food: Then: Ice-cream Now: Ice-cream
Magazine: Then: 16 Magazine AND Tigerbeat Now: Wallpaper, DWELL, and Canadian Art
You get the idea!
Of course 16 magazine is gone now (since the early 2000's) but Tigerbeat is still out there. They might as well rename it TigerBieber but I digress (yeah I probably would have been a fan too if I was born 35 years later).
Every once in awhile I am tempted to buy an old issue on ebay just for fun. Of course paying $20 for a magazine that was originally under $1 makes it less appealing but that's just me!
So, what are YOUR faves from then and now?
Until Tuesday!
Linda
