Big Ticket Items

Hiya Gentle Reader,

Saturday here in Toronto and all is pretty lovely.  Brunch - check, laundry - check (and folded!), and getting ready to go out to a home to hear a fabulous singer, see an amazing art show, AND get caught up with pals.  So excited!!

Did more organizing today and will do more tomorrow.  This time the big ticket items are getting reviewed.  A laptop computer, my watch collection, leather coat, and old camera.  Plus the usual favourites - paper, receipts, and clothing!

Those are always the items that keep me up at night as I go over the amount of money spent to purchase originally and how I couldn't bear to actually THROW it out.  Sigh.  It's not that I even want money for them (well yes for the watches) but more that I am keeping things that are really not being used it at all.  So every time I open the closet  or drawer or whatever, I see something that once meant a lot to me and now means very little.  Wrong size, out of date, etc.  I have this need to find homes for everything though. Everything.  (see Hellen? Another topic - sentimental attachment - help!)

I am learning that things are just things and NOT memories.  Just because you give an item away, doesn't mean that the memory will disappear along with it (unless you want it to do so!).  Taking a photo of the item is a great way to keep the item in your life but not take up any space.  Did this with a red plastic bath toy that I recycled a few years ago.  Had it as a baby but did I really need to keep it?  I'm sure that a number of child-safety laws were NOT in effect when this little guy was produced in the early 60's.  So I have a sweet photo and the duckie has moved on to his new home.  Win-win!

The $$$ items that are no longer useful to you are always the most difficult to recycle.  Very easy to dwell on the money you spent because maybe your finances were stretched back then and it took a lot of work to save for it.  Or your beloved Grandmother gave it for you so it reminds you of her visits.  Maybe you know the item was valuable at one time - your favourite designer suit - but now is no longer in fashion or your work doesn't require you to dress up.   One thing we can always count on - that life changes minute by minute.  Always best to appreciate what we have now!

What BIG TICKET items are you hanging onto and why?

Until Sunday!

Linda
