No Borders Here

Hey there,

Thursday, it's THURSDAY!! Ok, just making sure that we're on the same page.  Who needs coffee when you have ME?!

Having grown up in different cities in Canada, I was lucky enough to meet lots of interesting people across the country.  Now that I am physically settled in Toronto, I use Facebook to continue those friendships while making many new ones.  You see, in the world of Chartreuse Monkey, I don't have to know you to...well....KNOW you!

I don't believe in ranking friends based on actually having met, years of history, etc.  Oh sure, I do have pals that I connect with all the time BUT there are many who are part of my inner circle that I rarely see at all.  Some I have yet to even meet in person - though we chat by phone or email all the time.   Unless you live in the world of Dr. Seuss, I don't have BFF-1 and BFF-2, and maybe it's him and maybe it's YOU!

If our paths cross for whatever reason and a connection is made, then it stays there.  I realize that people do come and go throughout your life but that's just a part of the beauty of the Universe.  Like a river, ever-changing and fascinating each day.   Serendipity and synergy and all that jazz.  Sometimes you reach forward as the other person is reaching back.  Like a wonderful relay race.  So you're on the same team and enjoying the journey together.  I love those moments.  Had a lot of them happen in 2009. Truly magical!  Even more in 2010 and we're barely into the new decade. Lucky Monkey!

So this  takes me to the biggest global community of them all - Facebook.  All 350 million (uh-huh MILLION) active members and growing every week.   I admit that I did try Twitter last summer but didn't last long.  Too limiting and busy for me!  I like the one stop ease of Facebook instead.  Words, photos, music, and videos all combined in one place.  You see your pals and then see you. Real time. Groovy!!

Here I keep in contact with relatives (hey Cousins!), childhood pals, artsy friends, Siamese kitty lovers, and friends in the city.  Even have been able to meet some people that I have admired for years for their art, music, words, or other areas of expertise.  I am a huge believer in appreciating life and letting those in it know exactly how much they mean to you.  Please don't wait until a birthday, or the holidays or some other Hallmark card event to take that first step in sincerely telling someone how they have touched your world.  You'll BOTH be better for it if you do it NOW.

Some friends and I just get together every few months, some once a year, and some are on the list for a future hug in person.

Dear Gentle Reader, today I want you to write a note or email or call someone that has impacted your world for the best.  Time goes by so quickly that you may feel too much of it has passed. Not so.  In 2000, I FINALLY located my favourite teacher who was such a happy part of my high school years (and believe me, those years were NOT particularly joyful!).  She was shocked and actually asked if something was wrong that I felt the need to write after 25+ years.  Once I assured her that my health was perfectly fine and that I wasn't writing from a prison cell, she admitted that I was the first student in her ENTIRE career of almost 4 decades that had thanked her.   I didn't know whether to cry tears of joy or sadness.  That is so wrong.

SO today please connect with that one person - even if you haven't met them yet in real life but chat all the time on Facebook.   You know how much they mean to you. Time to let them know too.  Thank you!

Linda
