Group Hug!
Hey there,
Friday and we're here and that's the main thing.
This week my heart is with the people of Haiti and the crisis there. Completely heartbreaking. That's today's blog. About how we're all on this lovely planet to help one another. That has always been my motto. Can you imagine if your personal goal was just to watch out for your neighbours and help them when they needed it?
The internet has made our world one beautiful community. Borders are gone and we are connected through technology. The news about Haiti's earthquake hit YouTube before anything else. People were reaching out through Twitter to let family and friends know what was happening long before actual media were aware. YouTube is currently the top source for news - people turn to it for everything (think Susan Boyle or the balloon boy). It is the most personal way to hear and see the news. Unedited and raw. Sometimes very upsetting but always real. Nothing more devastating than hearing what is happening in Haiti by the people actually there.
While it is difficult not to feel helpless, you can do your part too. Many amazing organizations are out there that are getting aid to the people who need it the most. I especially like The Humanitarian Coalition http://www.humanitariancoalition.ca/ . Canada is matching dollar for dollar for every donation made by Canadians. That's wonderful! President Obama has committed to investing $100 million into the rebuilding of Haiti. From what we have seen on the videos, most of Haiti has been leveled to rubble. For us in North America, the cries from the Haitians reminds us of the tragedy in New Orleans after Katrina. All that devastation of life and history.
So today I want you to think how you can help your neighbour - whether they be literally next door or around the world. Could be with a financial donation, a warm hug, or a shoveled drive-way. Please reach out.
We are all part of humankind. Let's make this decade, the decade of caring and kindness.
Until Saturday, make it a GREAT day!
