Christmas Past
Hi there,
Here were are on Christmas Eve and the snowflakes are just starting to fall. HOORAY!!!
Lately I have been thinking a lot about Christmas past and my lovely memories about my Grandmother (Mom's Mom). She passed away in August 1986 at age 85. A remarkable woman who completely made Christmas - from the full dinner to decorations to stories to magic. My entire childhood Christmas (THAT Christmas, we all have THAT memory) was about her and my grandparents in Kitchener, Ontario.
They never had a real tree or even a green tree. My grandparents' tree was silver with blue shiny Christmas ornaments and blue lights. I LOVED that tree. Almost 10 years ago I looked everywhere for a silver tree. Ended up getting some fiber optics ones but I really REALLY wanted a silver tree. They were so rare then and very pricey on eBay. Now of course they are uber retro and EVERYWHERE but I realize that the tree doesn't make the holiday. I would want the actual tree from my grandparents and supposedly that was sold in auction in 1986 with everything else. I just hope the person who has it knows that they own a little bit of Christmas magic.
My grandmother decorated with candles, garland, and wreaths. Multicoloured lights on the front porch. Poinsettias here and there. Our stockings were hung on the back of the diningroom chair.
Christmas Eve would mean Midnight Mass and then coming back to what seemed like a mountain of beautifully wrapped gifts under the tree. Of course Santa was still on his way so the presents didn't include ones from him and the stockings were empty. We would put out cookies and milk and a note for Santa and carrots for the reindeers!
Oh and the baking!! Lots of homemade squares, date cookies with coconut, shortbread, sugar cookies, and gingerbread. Cookies for days. Plus pie of course - mincemeat (and tarts) and apple. You never had to chose WHICH dessert but rather would always get a sampler plate. *swoons* Not difficult to see how I ended up at WW so many years later....
Here's hoping that you enjoy a lovely Christmas Eve surrounded by loved ones (two-legged and four-legged).
Sleep well and let's get together tomorrow...CHRISTMAS!!!!
