Out with the Old and In with the New!

Hey there,

Three more sleeps and all is well here. How are you doing? 72 hours to go! Sounds like you have more time that way doesn't it?!!  Happy Tuesday to you!

This is the time of the year that if you do celebrate Hanukkah or Christmas, you may just get some lovely new things - clothes, jewelry, perfume/cologne, books, cds, movies, etc.  Now the rule for organizing says that you must recycle or give away one item for every new one that comes in.  Of course I'm not talking certain items here like jewelry or perfume BUT your book  or cd collection might do with some recycling - gives you more space and perhaps some coinage in your pocket.

At least twice a year, I like to go through both collections and send any books to the library (yes, they will take new or bestseller ones) or give away or sell cds.  Donating books to the library is another way to find them again if needed.

The biggest craze right now seems to be selling your old unused or unwanted gold jewelry.  Here is Toronto there are numerous places that will give you cash based on the weight of the gold.  Even broken items are accepted.  I've done this in the past and it is an easy way to make extra cash.  Especially if the items are sitting in a box somewhere, never to see the light of day again. If the items are of higher value, I would suggest contacting a high-end jewelry store like BIRKS in Canada and see if you can sell through their estate collection.  You will get more than if you sell the item for weight and a bit less than if you were to sell privately.  Have done all three and it is better to let the professionals sell on your behalf.  Easier too!

There are used cd and book stores out there but it is good practice to call ahead to see what they are looking for or provide them with a list ahead of time.

Apartment laundry rooms are another fabulous way of giving your used items a new home without travelling far. Either a sign on the community bulletin board to sell items or just place them in a box labelled FREE. They will be gone in hours and you will free up space for new items - win-win!

There are SOME items that you just can't have enough of though like FLANNEL pajamas or warm socks or SUGAR COOKIES!!  I will happily take your unwanted cookies.  Just saying!

Have a great Tuesday and we'll get together again tomorrow.

Linda
