Safety Net
Hey there,
Happy Lucky Friday the 13th to you! This is the day that I usually find money so it is a good day indeed. Please have a seat and relax. Here we go....
Been thinking a lot lately about my pals and all the amazing support they give me - not just over Weight Watchers but also for my art, my parents, and life in general. I have always felt the same back - an emotional safety net of sorts - that is unspoken.
Ok, if truth be known (and we're being honest here right?), it is spoken. I tell my friends all the time how much I love and appreciate them. If not always by words (some get a bit uncomfortable when you are all touchy-feely on an emotional level) but certainly by actions. I love to support artsy pals by attending their shows, plays, readings, etc. If someone has trouble with their love life I'm there. Same for woes about family ('tis the season!), work, and weight (been there, done that, twice!)
I like staying in touch by email (tech monkey here) or in person over coffee or dinner. I don't care if you're in the city or Sydney, I will call you to check up on you. Doesn't matter how long I've known you either - a few months, years, decades. I will be there for you.
No topic is off limits. However, I won't let you beat yourself up over some decision (or lack of) that resulted in making you feel like a loser. Everyone is human and we all make some pretty jumbo-sized mistakes in our lives. If we don't , we're not really living. I'd rather trip on the journey than sit quietly on the sidelines and never move.
Life is about taking risks, pushing yourself to do that one thing that makes your heart pound and your knees shake. You know - THAT risk. If you have that one friend in your life that will help you through those scary moments, that's a great thing. I even have it with kitten Jack! I tell you, animals are priceless and your pet will love you unconditionally no matter what happens in your life. They never judge, just love. A pretty amazing philosophy if you ask me!
The people in my life know that they have that safety net with me. I have certainly experienced it with them. Couches and shoulders offered during break-ups, picking up (or answering!) the phone in the middle of night when the tears wouldn't stop, and the soup and coffee deliveries on days when getting out of bed seemed monumental. Sometimes it is a card in the mail, a cute email, a smile, or a long warm hug (yes please!).
Do you give that support to your pals? Do they know it? Life is too short not to reach out to those going through tough times. A cup of coffee and someone's undivided attention is golden. SInce we're so connected through technology, our global community has become that much closer. You can easily be a pal to someone you've never actually met in person but feel an amazing connection.
When I was 5, I asked my grandmother why were all here on this planet (yes, a very serious kid - what the HECK happened?!) She answered "to help each other." That has been my life motto ever since.
Keep smiling and see you on Saturday!
Linda
