You Needed Me
Hey there,
Glad to see that you're back. Great day yesterday? Hope so!
Now you know I'm up here in Canada and this is a country that loves it's hockey, snow, maple syrup, and all things Anne Murray. She is our QUEEN and had been for 5 decades!! As a promise to my cousin, I attended Anne's book signing at Indigo at the Eaton Centre last night so I could take photos. Managed to get very close for the entire evening and in the process got the chance to chat with longtime fans.
The devotion they showed was very touching. Memories of their favourite songs, concerts, tv appearances and stories from those who had met Anne many times before. Their eyes lit up when Anne arrived 10 minutes early and many in the line-up had been there for hours. Some travelled up from the US! Everyone was grinning!
Now as a kid back in Edmonton and London, Ontario, in the 70's and 80's, I was a big Anne Murray fan myself. Collected photos, articles, CIBC posters (remember kids when Anne used to help you get a mortgage?!) and of course the albums! Saw her in concert 4x but the BEST one was in 1978 at the Royal Alex. First time ever that Anne had sung "You Needed Me" in concert. The audience knew a classic when they heard it!!
My Dad met Anne in 1977 after the opening game of the Toronto Blue Jays (Anne sung the national anthem). Later he sent her some cases of Schooner beer and she was thrilled as you could only get it in the Maritimes back then. That Christmas, Anne sent our family a beautiful photo card for the holidays - still have it!
Had one of my scrapbooks signed through BALMUR which was amazing. Had the BIGGEST CRUSH on her brother Bruce - loved his album - fantastic singer (remember the song "Who, What, Where, When, Why?").
Fast forward to the night of October 29, 2009. A chance to see Anne up close and personal. She's the real deal folks. Very genuine. She greeted each person like a long lost friend. Listened to their stories and was happy to have her photo taken with fans as well. Didn't leave until the very last book was signed. Her daughter Dawn Langstroth was there and it was clear that the bond between mother and child is very strong. Dawn delighted in watching her Mom meet the fans and took a photo of us taking a photo of her!
Thanks so much to the great Anne Murray fans I met last night - Carla, Kelly, Jenny, Les, Mary, Lorin, Missy, Maria, and Janet! Hope you had a special evening too!
Have a fabulous Friday and we'll catch up again tomorrow!
Linda

I've heard the name, but I don't think I know who she is. I love the story about your dad though.
